Intex® Above Ground Pool Filter Pump FAQ (frequently asked questions)
1.) Does a filter pump have to be used with my Intex above ground pool?
1.) Does a filter pump have to be used with my Intex above ground pool?
Yes, for hygienic purposes we recommend that a filter pump be used with all Intex 8' or larger above ground pools.
2.) Does the filter pump keep the pool walls and bottom clean?
No. With proper chemicals and filter cartridge replacement, the pump will keep the pool clean from suspended water particles. A pool vacuum should be used to clean the bottom of the pool. You can order the Intex pool vacuum to clean your pool, however it will not pick up fine dust or sand that sinks to the bottom.
3.) Can we use the pool while the filter pump is operating? Is it safe?
Yes, if the pump is operated according to the manual, and with proper GFCI installation. The Model M1 is the exception to this rule and should not be operated while using the pool.
4.) Will the immersed filter pump M1 (300 gal/hr) pose a safety hazard for the bather?
Although the M1 Filter Pump operates on only 12 volts, for safety reasons, do not use the pool while the pump is running.
5.) When using the Model M1 filter pump, how far should I place the transformer from the pool?
At least 7 ft. from the pool.
6.) Can I use the transformer of another brand for filter pump Model M1?
No, this will void the warranty. Damage to the pump, injury, or damage to any property or person would not be covered by this warranty.
7.) Can filter pump Model M1 be used with the large Deluxe pools and Swim Center pools?
Yes. Filter pump model M1 (#58605) can be used with the large Deluxe pools and Swim Center pools.
8.) Can any Intex pump be used to empty the pool?
No. Intex pumps are not designed for this purpose, with the exception of the Model M1 - 300 GPH pump which has a drain function. For draining purposes, only this particular model pump can be used with any Intex Above Ground Pool in order to drain small amounts of water remaining in the pool.
9.) What is the best way to store the filter pump for the winter?
Remove and dry all pump pieces including the hoses; coat the seals, O-Rings, and washers with petroleum jelly (see manual for detailed instructions).
10.) What is your suggestion on pump maintenance?
Occasionally, petroleum jelly may be applied to the "O-Ring" located underneath the top filter cover to minimize seal cracking. Check hoses for leaks and replace if needed. Also, make sure you've cleaned or replaced the filter cartridges as recommended.
11.) How often should the filter cartridge be replaced?
Depending on usage and water conditions, it is recommended that the cartridges be replaced every 2 weeks. The filter cartridge should be removed and checked at least once a week. It can be partially cleaned by rinsing with a garden hose. If it still appears dirty, it should be replaced immediately.
12.) Does the pump run on AC or DC power?
110-120V or 12V, single phase AC, in the US and Canada.
Yes, both UL (United States and Puerto Rico) and CSA (Canada) approved, with the exception of the Model M1 Filter Pump which is currently pending.
14.) Do you need to purchase a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlet?
Yes. It should be installed by a licensed electrician. In-Line GFCI's can also be purchased.
15.) What is a GFCI (circuit breaker).
GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) is an electronic device for protecting people from serious injury due to electric shock. GFCI constantly monitors electricity flowing in a circuit. If the electricity flowing into the circuit differs by even a slight amount from that returning, the GFCI will quickly shut off the current flowing through the circuit. The advantage of using a GFCI is that it can detect even small variations in the amount of current flowing through an electrical product, even amounts too small to activate a fuse or circuit breaker. GFCI works quickly in order to help protect consumers from severe electric shocks, while most common circuit breakers (thermal snap action) take far too long to stop the flow of electricity.
16.) What is the gallons per hour capacity of the pump?
17.) How many amps does it take to operate the filter pump?
Intex filter pumps draw .35 to 4.0 amps of current. Normal households have 15 ampoutlets.
18.) What is the life of the filter pump?
Estimated filter pump life is approximately 2000 hours, which is about 4 seasons of normal usage.
19.) Can I hook up a vacuum to the pump?
No, Intex pumps are not designed to be used with a vacuum.
20.) How do I know if I have a truly defective pump and not just an oversight on my part?
Review the Trouble Shooting Guide in the owner's manual.
21.) Should consumers repair the pump themselves?
No, because of the electrical connections and their location to the water chamber, and improper repair may result in injury or death.
22.) Are any tools required to assemble the pump?
No. A penny or dime can be used to tighten the hose clamps.
23.) Will the pump get damaged if splashed with water?
No.
24.) Is there a written warranty for this product?
Yes, the filter pump comes with a limited written one year warranty included in the owner's manual.
25.) What does the warranty cover?
All manufacturing defects in material or workmanship for a period of one year from the original date of purchase.
26.) How long is the filter pump electrical cord?
25 feet long for 110V - 120V AC. For the Model M1 Filter Pump, the 12 volt cord attached to the pump unit is 17 feet long. This cord then attaches to the 120 volt plug-in cord which is 7 feet long.
27.) What is the approximate weight of the pump?
28.) If the pump is defective will I be reimbursed for postage?
No, the pump is to be returned to Intex, freight prepaid. Intex will pay the postage to return the replacement pump. (See Limited Warranty in the Owner's Manual).
29.) What is the recommended procedure to keep my pool clean while waiting for my replacement pump?
Keep all debris out of the pool, keep it covered, and maintain the proper pH level.
30.) The water flow is not as strong as it used to be, why?
See the Trouble Shooting Guide in the Owner's Manual. Also, check the filter cartridge. If it is dirty the water flow will be much less powerful. Replace the cartridge. Also, check the hoses for any pinhole leaks. Tanning oil and sunblock lotion can create a clear coat on the filter cartridges which can cause diminished water flow.
31.) Can the filter pump be purchased from ONEinc?
Yes, ONEinc carries replacement filters and has them available for immediate shipping if the specific filter is currently in stock.
32.) Can the filter pump be operated when a cover is on the pool?
Yes, except for the Model M1. It is best to periodically check the Model M1 in order to prevent it from running dry. The filter pump and hook assembly should be removed from the pool before placing the cover on.
33.) On Models 02, 12, 12R, 51, 520, and 520R, should I turn on the pump before releasing the air pressure?
No. After the pool has filled with water, air can be released from the top of the filter chamber first, and then the motor can be turned on. See instructions in the Owner's Manual.
34.) Should the plunger valves on the Model 51 and 520/520R pumps be turned off when the pump is not running?
No, however the valves need to be closed for filter cartridge replacement.
35.) Can I adapt my 8', 10', 12', or 15' pool to the larger Model 51, Model 520, or Model 520R Filter Pumps?
Intex has hose adaptors available that allow consumers to convert the smaller sized pools to the larger Intex Model 51/520/520R Filter Pumps. You will need (2) hose adaptors, ID# 10371, and the Model 51 Filter Pump, ID# 16631, or Model 520/520R, ID# 18621 filter pumps. These parts can be ordered from www.intexcorp.com - Click on "Replacement Parts & Accessories" - Click on Model 51/520/520R Filter Pump, or call Intex Consumer Service at (800) 234-6839.
36.) Can I disassemble the motor housing to clean the inside?
No. This will invalidate the filter pump warranty and Intex will not be responsible for anythingthat might result from opening the motor housing for any reason.
37.) What is the filter pump usage time?
Usage time depends on the pump power and pool size.
This is clearly shown in the video tape attached to your pool set package.
38.) The Model 12R Filter Pump hoses have a white insert at both ends. Should I remove the white inserts from the hoses?
No. The white inserts at both ends of the hoses are to remain inside, firmly inserted into the hoses. Do not remove the white inserts from the hoses. These white inserts are not serviceable parts.
39.) What should I do if I'm experiencing some difficulty connecting the hoses into the black protruding hose connectors? Due to variations in ambient temperature, PVC parts may become stiffer of softer. To facilitate the connection of the hoses into the black protruding hose connectors on the pool wall, you may use soapy water solution (mix 6 drops of dish detergent in 1/2 a cup of water) to lubricate the hoses and the black protruding hose connectors. Continue per owner's manual. Do not use lubricants such as machine oil, industrial oil, or grease. |
